         The Binding Prayer:

A Prayer the Binds Evil

  and Releases Holy Angels

Many people are aware of positive and negative spiritual forces.  We feel the power of love sweeping through our lives and relationships.  We experience negative powers: greed, hatred, selfishness, and other dark spiritual forces moving through our hearts and in our world.  What can we do when dark forces attack? when we feel weak?  What can we do when we face a huge storm of power beyond anything we can dream to effect?

During Jesus' earthly ministry he delivered people from the powers of evil and filled them with the power of God.  Jesus calmed storms - even the wind and waves obeyed him (Mk. 4:26-41//Mt. 8:23-28//Lk. 8:22-27).

Jesus commanded spiritual forces with a profound authority.  Indeed, when Jesus began his ministry, one of the things that struck people immediately was his authority.  Unlike the scribes and Pharisees, Jesus, “taught them as one with authority” (Mt. 7:29//), and we see his authority embodied throughout his ministry, starting with the healing of the centurion’s daughter (Mt. 8:5-13) where the centurion recognizes Jesus’ authority, and his daughter, miles away, is completely healed at that very moment.  When the paralyzed man is carried in by his friends, Jesus declares to religious authorities that surrounded him, that he “has authority on earth to forgive sins” (Mt. 9:6). Subsequently Jesus tells the man that his sins are forgiven, and instructs him to “Take up his bed and walk!  The paralyzed man hears the command, stands up and walks!  That, friends, is authority! By the end of Jesus’ ministry he reveals to us, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me...” (Mt. 28: 18).

Some people misunderstood Jesus when he bound evil, accusing him of working through the power of evil.  Jesus explained that he worked in the opposite way.

He BOUND "the strong man" (spiritual evil) and removed what was in his house (Mt. 12:25-37). Jesus set people free from the power of darkness, and brought them into his kingdom of light.

What is more astounding is that Jesus gives that authority to US!  First he starts with the twelve disciples. “Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness.” (Mt. 10:1).

Then Jesus sends out seventy others and authorized them “to “cure the sick who are there, and say to them, "The kingdom of God has come near to you.' (Lk. 10:9), and he passes his authority and power on to us.  “the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.” (Jn. 14:12). Jesus gives his authority to his followers. His disciples long ago, and still today, have Christ's authority to free and to bless.  The following prayer offers a model for us.

In the name of Jesus Christ,

and by the power of His Blood and His Cross

I bind all spirits in the air and the fire,

in the water and the ground,

in the underground and in the netherworld.

I bind all satanic forces in nature.

I bind all curses, hexes and spells,

witchcraft and occult activity.

I bind the interaction and interplay of all spirits

And command all spiritual forces to go where they belong beneath the feet of Jesus .

I claim the protection of the shed Blood of Jesus Christ over... (name persons or places)

I now call Michael the Archangel

and his army of angels to surround, fill and protect this place...(name any locations where there is need)

I praise God for all of His heavenly angels.

I call them forth now and release them

to surround and fill us

with God's power and blessings,

in the name of the Father, and the Son,

and the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Why is this prayer so powerful?

First, we claim our authority in the Name of Jesus Christ. In the Acts of the Apostles, once Jesus himself had gone and the Holy Spirit had been sent to them, we hear regularly of the power of “the name of Jesus”… to forgive sins (2:38), to heal the sick (3:6), to cast out demons and deliver the oppressed (4:18; 16:18).  Jesus’ name has tremendous, as Paul writes to the Philippians, "and for this God raised him high, and gave him the name which is above all other names, so that all beings in the heavens, on earth, and in the underworld should bend the knee at the name of Jesus..." (2:9-10). Our Lord tells us that, “I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.”  (Jn. 14”13f) In the name of Jesus we are given authority over the evil one and all of his agents in every arena of life: nature, spiritual powers, physical diseases, emotional illness.

Next, we call on the power of Christ's cross and blood.

On the cross Jesus let evil attack him and do its worst, and then Jesus rose in victory!  The cross of Christ is the great reminder to us and to evil that the power of Christ has won the victory over the worst that sin and death can do.  By our trust in Christ's cross we claim that victory.

Blood has been from prehistoric times the only force to break the power of sin which has separated us from God.  This is why animals were sacrificed on the altar in the temple, and why Jesus had to pour out his blood to forever break sin’s grasp on us.

Further, the shed blood of Jesus Christ has sealed an everlasting covenant with all who love him when we drink from the cup in communion (Mt. 26:27-28).  Christ's shed blood pays for all of the punishment we rightly deserve.  Like the blood of the lamb shed over the doors of God’s people at the Passover, Jesus' blood protects us from all evil and seals us into life eternal as God's own children (1 Pt. 1:18-19).

By the power of Jesus' name, his cross, and his blood we bind any power in every dimension of the spiritual and physical world, the earth, air, water... that are acting against God’s will and way.  In times of threatening weather conditions, like Jesus in the storm, we claim this authority to calm nature’s power.  We are authorized by Jesus to bind all negative spiritual forces (Mt. 18:18).  There is a huge list of forces that can become ungodly, even demonic, including guilt and shame, complaining and rage, fear and doubt, jealousy and lust, and every other emotional force that has gotten out of place in us or others, including the power of addiction.

Our authority to bind includes attacks made by others using curses or occult activity.  If you are attentive you will see how people damn one another or send evil intentions, and while you may not know about it, our society is being influenced by occult activity.

We also bind all spirits from working together as teams.  It is stunning to notice how fear and guilt and doubt team up with addictions, for example.  Spiritual forces combine, and this prayer rips them apart and places them under the authority of Jesus. Jesus teaches us, "And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand?" (Lk. 11:18)  Like a strong person who may attack us, we bind up Satan and all evil forces.

Next, using this authority of Jesus , we command all of these forces to surrender themselves to Jesus, to go under his feet, under his command and authority.  Now the King of Kings and Lord of Lord will control them!

Now, we must not stop with our focus on darkness, even if binding it.  We turn our hearts and minds to the light and call forth the spiritual army of heaven!  We call forth Michael the archangel and his army to protect us and to empower us.

We claim all the spiritual powers of God to minister among us.  We release the angels to surround us and fill us with God's blessings and powers.   Remember Mt. 12:43-45, once a person has been delivered from the power of evil it is crucial to FILL that open space in our soul with the love and praises of God, and the company of God’s people.  Making ourselves aware of the spiritual presence of God and God’s angels all around us empowers us to live a life of faith and courage and confidence.

Sing your praises!  Picture God’s presence in your prayer imagination! Speak out your love and praise to God!  Believe in Christ’s victory and thank God, as you open ever room in your heart to be filled with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit!  Amen!

Two other prayers can be immensely helpful to claim God's protection and to renew our strength. "Put on the Whole Armor of God" and "A Healing Prayer of Light" available on this website, and I commend them to you for your prayer.

The prayer is an adaptation of a traditional Christian prayer.
